WHAT EVEN IS BUZZFEED?
Creator of BuzzFeed, Jonah Peretti, was born on New Year's Day in 1974. After finishing his post-grad studies at MIT, Peretti meets Ken Lerer and Ariana Huffington while working at a non-profit studio called eyeBeam. All three bond over their expressed interest in starting an Internet media company.
This leads to the creation of the Huffington Post in May of 2005. However Peretti feels as though he should be doing more, and branches off from the company after a year. With Lerer and a new teammate, John Johnson, Peretti co-founds Contagious Media LLC. In September of 2006, Peggy Wang becomes the first editorial hire at Contagious, and within the next month, BuzzFeed is born. She becomes the Editorial Director of BuzzFeed Life.
BuzzFeed sets out to get investors and succeeds, closing at 3.5 million dollars (in Series A). After that, BuzzFeed continues to grow through the use of internet savvy trick such as GIFs, memes, tweets, and other such devices, using them in proportion to actual articles. They qsuhickly amass a large following, most of which are people of the generation. Today, BuzzFeed is the leading independent digital media company.
